> ” And certainly Allah took a covenant from the children of Israil, and We raised amongst them twelve captains, and Allah said: Verily, I am with you; if you keep up salat, and pay zakat, and believe in my messengers, and support them, and lend to Allah a goodly loan; I will certainly wipe off from you your sins, and certainly cause you to enter gardens in which rivers flow; but whoso among you disbelieves, after this, will surely have wandered away from right path”: (12)
Flag 25: Bani Israil’s Twelve Captains & the Covenant Breaking: (Maidah-5: 12-14):

> ” And of them who say: Verily, we are christians: We (also) took their covenant, but they have forgotten a part of that whereof they were admonished. Therefore We stirred up among them enmity and hatred till the day of resurrection; and soon will Allah inform them of what they have been doing”: (14)

And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between the two. He creates what He wills; and Allah has power over all things”: (17)
> ” And the Jews and Christians say: ‘ We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones’. Say (O Muhammad): ‘ Why, then, does He punishes you for your sins?’ Nay, you are but men, (part) of those He has created; He pardons whom He pleases and punishes whom He wills; and to Allah belongs the dominion of heavens and earth and what is between the two; and to Him is the ultimate return (of all)”: (18)
> ” O people of the book! Indeed Our messenger (Muhammad) has come to you, explaining to you, after the break in (the series of) Our messengers, lest you say: ‘ There came not to us a bearer of glad tidings, nor a warner’: but, now has come to you a bearer of glad tidings and a warner (Muhammad), and Allah has power over all things”: (19)
Flag 27: Christians & Jews not Allah’s Sons; But an Ordinary Component of His Creation (Mankind): (Maidah-5: 17-19)

> ” He (Musa) said: O my Lord! I have control over none but myself and my brother, so cause a separation between us and these people who are rebellious”: (25)
Flag 28: Children Of Israil in Open Rebellion: (Maidah-5: 20-25)
> ” He (Allah) said: Then, verily this land is forbidden to them for forty years; they shall wander (perplexed) over the earth; therefore, do not grief for a people (who are) rebellious”: (26)
Flag 29: Wandering of Children of Israil for Forty Years: (Maidah-5: 26)
Note:
(i) Jewish disobedience and breaking the covenant and consequential punishment {(Being Allah’s Way (Sunnat)} to wander (perplexed) over the earth for forty years.
(ii) No reason to believe that prevailing of Allah’s Way (Sunnat) shall not be applicable to the faithfuls.
(iii) It is apparent, that the curse, for disregarding covenant with Allah at Ghadir Khum, is looming large and is unlikely to end before the arrival of the twelfth Imam.
> ” And recite to them with truth the story of the two sons of Adam, when they both offered an offering. It was accepted from one but was not accepted from the other. (The latter) said: I shall certainly slay you. (The former) said: Verily, verily, Allah accepts only (the sacrifice) from those who safeguard themselves against evil with full awareness of divine laws (Muttaqin)”
(Maidah-5: 27)
Flag 30: The initiation of Violence (Fisad-Fil-Arz) on Earth: (Maidah-5: 27)
Note:
(i) The landing of Adam and his adversary Shaytan on earth had occurred. The early commencement of the struggle had taken shape.
(ii) Qābeel (Cain), led by arrogance and envy to do away with his younger brother, Hābeel (Abel):
> ” If you stretch forth your hand against me to slay me, I shall not stretch forth my hand against you to slay you; verily, I fear Allah, the Lord of the worlds”
(Maidah-5: 28)
> ” Verily, I intend that you should bear my sin as well as your own; so you will be among the companions of fire, and this is the punishment of unjust”
(Maiadah-5: 29)
> ” So his passion led him to slay his brother, and became one of the losers”
(Maidah-5: 30)
Flag 31: Mankind’s First Assassination: (Maidah-5: 27-30)
Note:
(i) Habeel’s assassination: The first act of (Fisad-fil-Arz) amongst mankind (or, perhaps Homo-Erects turned into Homo-Sapiens).
(ii) History of Marriage with Blood Relations: At that time, there had been no concept of inhibitions on marriage with blood relations. Reportedly, marriage related rivalry being one of the reasons behind Qabeel’s crime.
(iii) Civilization and culture went through a gradual adoption of commandments sent down through the chain of messengers.
(iv) Everything did not happen in one go.
(v) Guidance (Hidayat) was passed on by the adoption of Allah’s Way (Sunnat) taking into account ground realities such as physical, geographical, and cultural aspects.
(vi) Allah’s Way (Sunnat) had always been a dynamic instead of static command.
Flag 32: Knowing the ‘Transition Phase’ of the ‘Divine Order’: (Maidah-5: 30)
Additional Note:
(i) The transitional development of civilization (Adam to Nuh and a few subsequent prophets) may be taken as the formative phase. It appears that the key issue during this period had been the denial of prophet-hood and rejection of messages brought forward by them. The promulgation and adherence to ‘Divine Order’ details continued to be of the secondary significance. However, progressive emphasis on the same continued in the background in a gradual manner.
(ii) With Ibrahim (the fountainhead of Islam) launching of the promulgation of the ‘Divine Order’ leading to the ultimate shape commenced.
> ” Then Allah sent a crow which dug up the earth so as to show how to cover up the naked corpse of his brother>>>”
(Maidah-5: 31)
Flag 33: Allah’s first lesson of ‘Science’ to Mankind: (Maidah-5: 31):
Note:
(i) Science being the heart of Allah’s Way (Sunnat) reflected by its early introduction as below: The flow of guidance from the Lord had commenced by the way of adoption of Allah’s Way (Sunnat):
(ii) The lesson of using ‘intellect’ as a tool for observing and gathering data and adopting it for use in practical life. Today, this may be introduced as the first-ever lesson of ‘Science’.
(iii) Science was introduced by the Lord (Allah) as the necessary step for survival on earth.
(iv) The flow of guidance to mankind had commenced as the ‘Way of Adoption’ of Allah’s Way (Sunnat) and ‘Science’ being its integral component even at that earliest stage.
> ” for this reason we prescribed for the children of Israel that he who slays a human being for other than murder (as punishment for killing another human being) or for spreading corruption in the land, (it shall be) as though he has slain all mankind; and he who saves a human life, it shall be as though he has saved the entire mankind. And certainly, our messengers came to them with clear evidence, and yet, verily, many of them, even after that, commit excesses in the land”: (32)
Flag 34: Slaying of One Innocent constitutes Slaying of Entire Mankind & Vice Versa: (Maidah-5: 32)
Note:
(i) Fisad-fil Arz (Spreading lawlessness and mischief on the land) bracketed with murder as a crime (32)
> ” The recompense for those who wage war against Allah and His messenger, and strive in spreading mischief in the land, is only that they should be slain or crucified, or that their hands and their feet should be cut of from the opposite sides, or they be banished from the land, and for them, in the hereafter shall be a great torment”: (33)
Flag 35: Punishment for spreading mischief on land (Fisad-fil-Arz): (Maidah-5: 33)
Note:
(i) After the declaration of Ghadir Khum (Miadah-5: 67 & 03) and non-compliance after (Maidah-5: 07): the sequence of Aaayats (Maidah-5: 20-34), starting from non-compliance with covenants with Allah and with the murder of innocent (Adam’s son) along with waging war against Allah and spreading mischief on land culminating in the pronouncement of punishments is sufficient to underscore the gravity of the matter. The non-compliance resulted in the slaying of prophets and imams and particularly those at Karbala.
> ” Except those who repent before you overpower them. Know that Allah is oft forgiving, merciful”: (34)
> ” O you who believe! Fear Allah and seek means of approach to Him, and strive hard in His way, that haply you may have success”: (35)
Flag 36: Seeking Means of Approach to Allah (Wasila): (Maidah-5: 35)
Note:
(i) Allah directs ‘Seeking of means of access (Wasila)’ to approach Him.
(ii) If Allah had willed He could have guided mankind directly through inspiration, but in His infinite wisdom, He had not deemed it desirable. Instead he conveyed through representatives (Prophets).
(iii) It is therefore necessary to seek (Wasila) to successfully approach Allah.
(iv) For faithfuls, these include Muhammad and the (Ahlul Bayt) who have been thoroughly purified by Allah (Azab-33: 33)
> ” Verily, those who disbelieve, if they had all that is in the earth, and two times more, so that they might ransom (themselves) therewith from the torments of the day of resurrection; it shall not be accepted from them; and for them there is a painful torment”: (36)
> ” They would desire to come out from the fire, but shall not be able to come out therefrom, and for them shall be a lasting torment”: (37)
Flag 37: Disbelievers on the day of resurrection: (Maidah-5: 36-37)
> ” And (as for) the thief, whether man or woman, cut off their hands as punishment for what they have earned, an exemplary punishment from Allah; and Allah is mighty and wise”: (38)
> ” But he who turns repentant to Allah after his iniquity, and reforms, then, verily. Allah turns to him (mercifully). Verily, Allah is oft-forgiving, merciful”: (39)
> ” Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of heavens and earth; He punishes whom He wills, and pardons whom He pleases and Allah has power over all things”: (40)
Flag 38: Punishment for Thefts & Repentance: (Maidah-5: 38-40)
Note:
(i) Next to high moral education and deep religious upbringing, it is fear of consequences, as experience proves, that keeps in check the tendency to steal and thieve.
(ii) Adultery destroys purity of character and rends asunder the peace and harmony of the society.
(iii) Therefore these two crimes have been particularly underlined for severe punishment.
(iv) The ‘Divine’ statute in this regard is not to be taken lightly. However, as in most cases, Allah has not totally closed the window of repentance.
> ” O Messenger (Muhammad) do not let those who vie with one another in infidelity grieve you (namely) those who say : ‘We believe’ with their mouths, and their hearts believe not; and of the Jews, listeners to falsehood, listeners on behalf of other people (as spies) (who) have not come to you; they distort the words (of the Tawrat) out of context, and say: ‘If you are given this (what we tell you) take it, and if you are not given this, beware! ‘: (As for him) whom Allah desires to try, you can never intercede with Allah for him. Those are they whose hearts Allah will not purify; for them is disgrace in this world and a great punishment in the hereafter”: (41)
> ” (They are) listeners to falsehood, devourers of illicit gain, therefore if they come to you (O Muhammad) judge between them or turn away from them, and if you turn away from them, then they shall never (be able) to harm you at all; but if you judge, then judge between them with equity; verily Allah loves those who are equitable”: (42)
Flag 39: Allah’s Legislative Command Concerning People of the Book: (Maidah-5: 42)
Note:
(i) Reference (Maidah- 42): If the people of the book refer their dispute to the Holy Prophet or any of his successors, it can be judged in the light of their books or in accordance with the Islamic law, or it can be referred back to their own jurists.
> ” But how shall they make you a judge, when the Tawrat is with them which contains the (clear) judgment of Allah? Yet they turn away (even) after that, and such people are not believers”: (43)
> ” Verily We sent down the Tawrat which contains guidance and light, in accordance with which (Our) messengers who submitted (to Allah) judged the Jews; and so did the divine (rabbis) and the scholars (priests) by that wherewith they were entrusted of the book of Allah, and they were witnesses thereof. Therefore, do not fear the people, but fear Me; and do not barter My signs away for a small price; and those who do not judge by what Allah has sent down are infidels indeed”: (44)
> ” And We prescribed therein for them a life for life, and an eye for an eye, and a nose for a nose, and an ear for ear, and a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds reprisal; but he who forgoes it (out of charity), then it shall be for him an expiation. And those who do not judge by what Allah has sent down are the unjust”: (45)

(iii) Transgressors (Maidah-5: 47)
> ” And We caused Isa, son of Maryam to follow in their footsteps, confirming the Tawrat which had been (sent down) before him, and We gave him the Injil containing guidance and light, and confirming what was (sent down) before it in the Tawrat – a guidance and an admonition for those who safeguard themselves (against evil) with full awareness of the divine laws (Mutaqin): (46)
> ” And let the people of the Injil judge by what Allah has sent down in it; and whoever does not judge by what Allah has sent down, these, then, are the transgressors”: (47)
Flag 41: Compliance with Legislative Command based on Allah’s Way (Sunnat) equally mandatory for the people of the book: (Maidah- 47)
> ” And We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (Quran) with truth, confirming what is before it of the book, and a guardian over it. Therefore judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their (vain) desires, diverging from what has come to you of the truth>>>”
(Maidah-5: 48)
Flag 42: Legislative Progression with respect to Allah’s Way (Sunnat): (Maidah-5: 48)
Note:
(i) The applicable laws as per Allah’s Way (Sunnat) went through a process of change to suit on-ground realities with respect to each ‘Era’.
(ii) Claiming rigidity to precedences in this regard is not what Allah desires.
(iii) Ongoing development of legislative guidelines in line with the contemporary requirements based on Allah’s Way (Sunnat) needs to be understood.
>>> ” To each of you We appointed a law and a (clear) way; and if Allah had desired, He would have made you (all) a single community, but what He might try you by what He has given (to each of) you, therefore vie one with another in good deeds. To Allah will you all return; and then He shall declare to you concerning that you differered (48)
Flag 43: Understand Allah’s Guidelines Concerning Interfaith: (Maidah-5: 48)
Note:
(i) Allah’s command to peaceful ‘Mutual Coexistence’ with respect to interfaith is clear.
(ii) While preaching faith is an acceptable norm, imposing the same on others is not what has been commanded. Least of all, disputed issues to turn into a source of violence is forbidden.
(iii) The same logic applies to ‘Inter Sectarian’ issues amongst the Muslims.
(iv) All disputed matters must be left to Allah to be resolved on the day of resurrection.
> ” And (Allah Commands) that you should judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and not follow their vain desires, and beware of them lest they beguile you from (any) part of what Allah has sent you; and if they turn back, then, know that Allah desires to afflict them for some of their sins; and verily, many of the people are transgressors”: (49)
Flag 44: Allah’ Command to Judge with Equity & Jewish/Hypocrite Maneuvering to Thwart it: (Maidah-5: 41-49)
Note:
(i) Mischief making by hypocrites, Jews and Christians, with particular reference to seeking judgements to their liking, from the Holy Prophet by presenting distorted versions of the books (Tawrat/Injil) stands exposed.
(ii) Judgment belongs to Allah alone and any delegation in this respect must comply with Allah’s legislative framework conforming to Allah’s Way (Sunnat).
